The principle of detection is that the granule in the smoke can reflect infrared light. Infrared diodes are placed in the special chamber. The chamber can protect from external light, but does not affect the smoke inside. Without smoke, the diode can receive very weak infrared light. When smoke enters the detector, the diode can receive strong infrared light.
